Maryland's 6th District Democratic Candidate Pledges to Prioritize AAPI Engagement if Elected

April McClain Delaney, a former U.S. Commerce Department official, is running for Maryland's 6th Congressional District. As the wife of the district’s former Congressman John Delaney and a tech policy official in the Biden administration, she’s no stranger to Washington politics. However, her opponent, Republican Neil Parrott, has run for this seat twice before and has served as a state delegate since 2011. Delaney will need to work hard to build name recognition and rally support from all communities in the district, including Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

I discovered my passion for videography two years ago during my master’s program at Medill, Northwestern University. With years of experience as a feature and profile writer—trained to catch every subtle expression and nuanced detail at reporting venues—I found that these skills translated naturally into visual storytelling. As it turns out, video production offers me another powerful medium to bring stories to life.

The Cherokee language hasn't been taught at school for at least three generations even at the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. There are 9,600 people living there with only around 189 fluent Cherokee first-language speakers among the population, according to the U.S. Census and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The tribe is working hard to increase the number of fluent speakers and revitalize their language before it's too late.
